Gorean Medicine
Got a cut, scratch, or other such injury? Well Gor has its own brand of medicine that is far more advanced then that of Urth, yet much of it would resemble eastern herbalism. Below is list of various healing items and techniques, everything from the basics to the most advanced medicines.
All wounds on Gor heal quickly and Goreans are very rarely ill. Bones can heal as fast as 3 days. Tendons heal in as fast as 2 days. Bruises heal in as little as 1 day. All dressings should be checked and cleaned daily and most stitches removed after a day.
Various Medicines and Herbs of Gor used in healing
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brak Bush:
Almost all doors, including that of the House of Cernus, had nailed to them some branches of the Brak Bush, the leaves of which, when chewed, have a purgative effect.

Breeding Wine;
(also called Second Wine)
(see quote for Teslik)
She did not need the sip root, of course, for, as she had pointed out, she had had some
within the moon, and, indeed, the effect of sip root, in the raw state, in most women, is three or four moons. In the concentrated state, as in slave wine, developed by the caste of physicians, the effect is almost indefinite, usually requiring a releaser for its remission,
usually administered, to a slave, in what is called the breeding wine, or the "second wine." When this is administered she usually knows that she has been selected for crossing with a handsome male slave.

Capture Scent
She opened her eyes, and shook her head. "What is this?" she said. "Capture scent," I said. "Shall I hold again the vial beneath her nose?" I asked. Soaked in a rag and scarf and held over the nose and mouth of a female it can render her unconscious in five Ihn. She squirms wildly for an Ihn or two, and then sluggishly, and then falls limp. It is sometimes used by tarnsmen; it is often used by slavers. Anesthetic darts, too, are sometimes used in the taking of females; these may be flung, or entered into her body by hand; they take effect in about forty Ihn; she awakens often, stripped, in a slave kennel.

Fan Palm
I then rose to my feet and walked a few yards away, to a fan palm. From the base of one of its broad leaves I gathered a double handful of fresh water. I returned to the girl and, carefully, washed out the wound. She winced. I then cut some leaves and wrapped them about it. I tied shut this simple bandage with the tendrils of a carpet plant.

Frobicain
"We permit them," said Flaminius, deigning to offer a bit of explanation, "five Ahn of varied responses, depending on when they recover from the frobicain injection. Mostly this takes the form of hysterical weeping, threats, demands for explanation, screaming and such. They will also be allowed to express their distress for certain periods at stated times in the future."

Gieron
(see quote for Sajel)
Kanda
Tobacco is unknown on Gor, though there are certain habits or vices to take its place, in
particular the stimulation afforded by chewing on the leaves of the Kanda plant, the roots of which, oddly enough, when ground and dried, constitute an extremely deadly poison.
-- pages 24-25, Priest-Kings of Gor
Kutaituchik absently reached into a small golden box near his right knee and drew out a string of rolled kanda leaf. The roots of the kanda plant, which grows largely in the desert regions of Gor, are extremely toxic, but, surprisingly, the rolled leaves of this plant, which are relatively innocuous, are formed into strings and, chewed or sucked, are much favored by many Goreans, particularly in the southern hemisphere, where the leaf is more abundant.

Leech Plant
Once I shouted in pain. Two fangs had struck into my calf. An ost, I thought! But the fangs held fast, and I heard the popping, sucking sound of the bladder like seed pods of a leech plant, as they expanded and contracted like small ugly lungs. I reached down and jerked the plant from the soil at the side of the road. It writhed in my hand like a snake, its pods gasping. I jerked the two fanglike thorns from my leg. The leech plant strikes like a cobra, and fastens two hollow thorns into its victim. The chemical responses of the bladder like pods produce a mechanical pumping action, and the blood is sucked into the plant to nourish it. As I tore the thing from my leg, glad that the sting had not been that of the venomous ost, the three hurtling moons of Gor broke from the dark cover of the clouds. I held the quivering plant up. Then I twisted it apart. Already my blood, black in the silvery night, mixed with the juices of the plant, stained the stem even to the roots. In a matter of perhaps two or three seconds, it had drawn perhaps a gill of liquid. With a shudder I hurled the loathsome plant away from the road. Normally such plants are cleared from the sides of the roads and from inhabited areas. They are primarily dangerous to children and small animals, but a grown man who might lose his footing among them would not be likely to survive.
-- pages 33-34, Outlaw of Gor
Once I stopped to rest. I lay, panting on the grass. My eyes were closed. I heard a rustle. I
turned my head and opened my eyes. I watched it in terror. It was vine like, and tendriled, leaved. A blind, split, pod like head was moving toward me, lifting itself slightly from the
ground, moving from side to side. Inside the pod I could see, fastened in the upper surface, too long, curved, thorn like fangs. I screamed, leaping to my feet. The thing suddenly struck at me. It tore through the fabric of the slacks on my right leg. I pulled my leg away, tearing away the cloth. It struck again and again, as though sensing me by smell or heat, but it was rooted, and I was beyond its reach. I threw back my head, my hands to the sides of my head, and screamed. I heard another rustle, near me. I looked about, wildly, I saw the other plant, and then two others, too. And then another. Sweating, picking my way, I fled from the area. Then I was into the open grass again.

Poison
(see quote for Kanda)
"I would not have thought Sarus of Tyros would have used poisoned steel," I said. Such a device, like the poisoned arrow, was not only against the codes of the warriors, but, generally, was regarded as unworthy of men. Poison was regarded as a woman's weapon. Iskander shrugged. "Sullius Maximus," he said, "invented such a drug. He tested it, by pin pricks, on the limbs of a captured enemy, paralyzing him from the neck down. He kept him seated at his right side, as a guest in regal robes, for more than a week. When he tired of the sport he had him killed." "Is there an antidote?" I asked. "No," said Iskander.
-- pages 18-19, Marauders of Gor
Sajel
"The drug," said Shaba, "was a simple combination of sajel, a simple pustulant, and gieron, an unusual allergen. Mixed they produce a facsimile of the superficial symptoms of Bazi plague."
-- pages 154-155, Explorers of Gor
Sip Root
"We make them chew carefully and watch closely to see that they swallow, bit by bit, in small swallows, sip roots, as well," said another. "We then examine their mouths, forcing them widely open, to determine that they have finished their entire allotment of the root," said another. I nodded. Sip roots are extremely bitter. Slave wine, incidentally, is made from sip roots. The slaves of the red savages, like slaves generally on Gor, would be crossed and bred only as, and precisely as, their masters might choose.
-- pages 124-125, Blood Brothers of Gor
Slave Wine
(see quote for Sip Root)
Slave wine is bitter, intentionally so. Its effect lasts for more than a Gorean month. I did not wish the females to conceive. A female slave is taken off slave wine only when it is her master's intention to breed her.

Stabilization Serum
The Player was a rather old man, extremely unusual on Gor, where the stabilization serums were developed centuries ago by the Caste of Physicians in Ko-ro-ba and Ar, and transmitted to the Physicians of other cities at several of the Sardar Fairs. Age, on Gor, interestingly, was regarded, and still is, by the Castes of Physicians as a disease, not an inevitable natural phenomenon. The fact that it seemed to be a universal disease did not
dissuade the caste from considering how it might be combated. Accordingly the research of centuries was turned to this end. Many other diseases, which presumably flourished centuries ago on Gor, tended to be neglected, as less dangerous and less universal than that of aging. A result tended to be that those susceptible to many diseases died and those less susceptible lived on, propagating their kind. One supposes something similar may have happened with the plagues of the Middle Ages on Earth. At any rate, disease is now almost unknown among the Gorean cities, with the exception of the dreaded Dar-kosis disease, or the Holy Disease, research on which is generally frowned upon by the Caste of Initiates, who insist the disease is a visitation of the displeasure of Priest-Kings on its recipients. The fact that the disease tends to strike those who have maintained the observances recommended by the Caste of Initiates, and who regularly attend their numerous ceremonies, as well as those who do not, is seldom explained, though, when pressed, the Initiates speak of possible secret failures to maintain the observances or the inscrutable will of Priest-Kings. I also think the Gorean success in combating aging may be partly due to the severe limitations, in many matters, on the technology of the human beings on the planet. Priest-Kings have no wish that men become powerful enough on Gor to challenge them for the supremacy of the planet. They believe, perhaps correctly, that man is a shrewish animal which, if it had the power, would be likely to fear Priest-Kings and attempt to exterminate them. Be that as it may, the Priest-Kings have limited man severely on this planet in many respects, notably in weaponry, communication and transportation. On the other hand, the brilliance which men might have turned into destructive channels was then diverted, almost of necessity, to other fields, most notably medicine, though considerable achievements have been accomplished in the production of translation devices, illumination and architecture. The Stabilization Serums, which are regarded as the right of all human beings, be they civilized or barbarian, friend or enemy, are administered in a series of injections, and the effect is, incredibly, an eventual, gradual transformation of certain genetic structures, resulting in indefinite cell replacement without pattern deterioration. These genetic alterations. moreover, are commonly capable of being transmitted. For example, though I received the series of injections when first I came to Gor many years ago I had been told by Physicians that they might, in my case, have been unnecessary, for I was the child of parents who, though of Earth, had been of Gor, and had received the serums. But different human beings respond differently to the Stabilization Serums, and the Serums are more effective with some than with others. With some the effect lasts indefinitely, with others it wears off after but a few hundred years, with some the effect does not occur at all, with others, tragically, the effect is not to stabilize the pattern but to hasten its degeneration. The odds, however, are in the favor of the recipient, and there are few Goreans who, if it seems they need the Serum's, do not avail themselves of them. The Player, as I have mentioned, was rather old, not extremely old but rather old. His face was pale and lined, and his hair was white. He was smooth shaven.

Tassa Powder
I had been forced, sitting in the courtyard, my head back and nose held, to swallow a draft of water, into which a reddish powder had been mixed. I had shortly thereafter lost consciousness. "You have recovered more quickly than I had anticipated from the Tassa powder," she said... "In the courtyard below," I said, "I was drugged." "It was done by Tassa powder," she said. "It was tasteless, and effective," I said. "Slavers sometimes use it," she said. "It is well for a girl not to drink with a strange man," she laughed. "It shows up, of course," I said, "in water." "It is meant to be mixed with red wine," she said.
-- pages 222-224, Fighting Slave of Gor
Inside, in a previously prepared room, on a great table, were aligned two hundred goblets of wine. Each contained Tassa powder.
-- page 113, Guardsman of Gor
Teslik
The active ingredient in the breeding wine, or the "second wine," is a derivative of teslik. In the matter of bitterness of taste there is little to choose from between raw sip root and slave wine, the emulsive qualities of the slave wine being offset to some extent by the strength of the concentration involved.

Cauterizing VS Stitching and Bleeding Control
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There has been a battle and many are injured with many open wounds, what do you do? Well, among other things, you will need to close the open wounds. But how do we do this? There are two main methods used to close a wound, cauterizing and stitching. Cauterizing seems to be the method of choice for some camps Cities and Camp, but is to be avoided whenever possible. When you cauterize a wound, you are destroying tissue. Use it only if absolutely necessary. Cauterizing too much of an area has harmful side effects but is fast and effective if used correctly You are creating a severe burn. This burn can be infected. If cauterizing to stop bleeding, you are, most likely, destroying blood supply which may result in the need for amputation if inadequate blood supply remains. As you can see that there are cons to cauterizing. Stitching excessive bleeding or a single bleeding wound is preferable You may also apply pressure over the wound and elevate the extremity above level of heart.
ANIMAL BITES / ATTACKS:
(see snake bites for Osts, no cure, death in seconds)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SLEEN: (20' long feline, 6 legs, 2 rows teeth)
LARL: (7' at shoulder feline, similar to a lion)
KUR: (8-9' furred mammal, 4 legs, stands or all fours, each paw has 6 digits w/ retractable claws and thumb, 2 rows of teeth, eat humans)
TARN: (hawk-like bird, is ridden, used in battle and racing)
BOSK: (large, shaggy, long-horned bovine similar to cattle)
ANT: (of Schendi, 2" in length, bite is vicious and extremely painful, but it is not poisonous)
1. give "antivenin serum" for sleen bites or clawings, always
2. control bleeding using pressure and sterile pads
3. use "tessa powder/kanda salve" -- when sprinkled/applied to a wound provides a numbing effect allowing stitching -- (tessa powder can also render unconsciousness if mixed with kalana, it is tasteless)d. check wound for any severed arteries, repair as per reconnection if possible, amputation and cauterize if not
4. irrigate well with marigold oils for the prevention of infection and flush from the area any debris (careful with green paga, its made from grain and can cause serious infections, it is not a disinfectant)
5. look for imbedded claws or teeth
6. throat damaged can cause air path to be interrupted and blood to lungs that would in itself kill if the bleeding to death did not first two tubes: (need permission to use, has "trocar" on tip that punches trough skin) one to throat to get air to them and one to lungs try to drain blood out of lungs
7. suture using a small needle and tiny stitches to minimize scarring if possible (see "stitching a wound") I. cover the wound with kanda salve to numb then healing herb powder, then cover with pad, wrap with sterile bandages carefully checking to be sure there is a good pulse above and below the wound
8. if a lot of blood loss give cup of "restoration broth"
9. offer bazi tea (not the ceremony, a mug) it is a natural pain killer
10. restrictions should include (depending on the severity of the injury) -- elevation at least 45 degrees, no riding, no patrol, no activity for 24 hours, no alcoholic beverages -- until after a reassessment
11. do not restrict furring unless this is a groin injury or again a severe injury merely caution that if it hurts, stop
BANDAGE MAKING:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
make bandages using clean soft rep cloth, cut/rip into strips then sterilize strips in boiling rain water 30 ehn, dry then:
1. for wrapping bandages, roll long pieces,
2. for flat pad type bandages, used to stop bleeding, just fold shorter strips flat -- then check Master's medical & surgical kit by His chair, the kitchen medical kits, and those stored in the medical supply room
3. if needed place a couple of each in the kit.
BLADES / WEAPONS STILL IN WOUNDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. reach for two sterile rep pads hold one next to the wound tightly
2. offer kanda leaf (need permission from Free to use. Tell Free not to swallow leaf or juices, just chew on it, poison if swallowed) OR offer "tessa powder" mixed with kalana to drink, renders unconsciousness, it is tasteless
don't pull out barbed weapons !!!!!
4. using second sterile pad or silver tongs, pull the object (arrows, quivas, bolts, blades, etc.) out in one clean swift motion
5. lay weapon in cloth next to the Master
6. apply pressure to stop the bleeding
7. black pepper powder stops bleeding
8. clean the wound with sterile water or marigold oil on pad
9. re-apply pressure to stop bleeding if needed
10. apply kanda salve to edges to be stitched, then stitch accordingly (see "stitching a wound")
11. offer "restoration broth" to drink if a lot of blood was lost
BLOOD LOSS / BLEEDERS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
give cup of "restoration broth" to drink; and fruit juices
BROKEN BONES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Types of breaks
Incomplete:
The break doesn't go through the whole bone.
Complete:
The bone is broken all the way through but still in contact.
Simple fracture:
The break goes all the way through the bone. The bone is separated but held together by muscle and skin.
Compound fracture:
The bone has penetrated the skin.
1. broken bones need to be handled by a healer NEVER try to reset the bone yourself
2. girl can immobilize the limb or body area
3. a simple splint will work, be sure to use ample padding before applying the splints
Don'ts of broken bones
1. Don't try to reset the break.
2. Don't allow the bone to move.
3. Don't apply a splint without applying ample padding first.
BRANDING (SLAVE BRANDS) WOUNDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
rinse with marigold oil to prevent infection, apply layer of kanda salve to numb the pain, do not wrap
BRUISING:
1. fill a verr-skin bag with cold water/ice if available OR a cool mud pack held in place by bandaging can also be used on the bruised place
2. offer to massage it gently with oil
3. then wrap a bandage around
BURNS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Types of burns:
first degree burns
outer layer of skin is burned, it will be red and painful
second degree burns
deeper burns, into the second layer of tissue
third degree burns
can be extremely deep, doing damage to muscle and tendon gently bathe the burn in clean cool water change dressing often infection is a major concern of burn victims
Don'ts of treating burns
1. Don't apply salve or grease.
2. Don't bathe or soak in ice water. cool water is ok.
3. Don't peel off dead or blistered skin.
CAUTERIZING A WOUND
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. wash the wound with sterile water mixed with healing powder OR marigold oil (do not use regular paga for this, serious infections come from fermented grains -- paga must contain healing powder to be used) offer "tessa powder mixed with ka-la-na" to render person unconscious, it is tasteless
2. cauterize wound (ask Free permission to use a weapon) a fire poker should always be ready in the hot coals just in case of an emergency (a quiva can be used also)
3. check poker to see if it glows white
4. press it to the wound quickly
5. holding for five seconds
6. swiftly remove the poker or quiva
7. check to make sure the wound is sealed completely
8. rinse with marigold oil to fight infection
9. apply layer of kanda salve to numb area
10. apply healing herb powder
11. cover with sterile pad
12. wrap the wound with clean bandages
CELLULAR DISRUPTION
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instant cellular disruption leads to immediate death
Rapid aging, leads to death in about a Hand.
CUTS / GASHES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. wipe the blood away with a sterile pad
2. clean the wound with sterile water or marigold oil on pad
3. apply marigold oil to fight infection
4. decide if it needs stitching (see "stitching a wound") either way, apply kanda salve to numb area
5. apply healing herb powder
6. cover with sterile pad
7. wrap a bandage around to protect it
DAR-KOSIS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-(lit. 'holy disease'): an incurable, wasting disease akin to the Earth disease of leprosy
SHOCK
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. shock can be fatal
2. have the patient lay down, keep Him calm, elevate the legs slightly, except in the case of a head wound loosen any restrictive clothing remember the main goal is to increase the blood flow to the primary organs, in particular the brain
3. keep Him warm but do not allow to over heat
4. patient can have as much water He wants to drink, don't force Him to drink
Signs of shock include:
1. pale, sweaty or clammy skin
2. rapid heart rate, shallow respirations
3. low blood pressure
4. decreased alertness
5. confusion
Don'ts of shock
1. Don't over heat the patient.
2. Don't let the patient become agitated, keep Him calm.
POISON
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. mix large amounts of honey and bosk and make the slave/Free drink it all
2. poisons work fast, usually by the 3rd heart beat, death by the 10th, once given the antidote within 2-3 hours slave is back to perfect health
SNAKE BITES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OSTS:
(tiny snake, 12" long, bright orange)
1. there is no cure for ost venom
2. painful death by poisoning within seconds
3. pronounce dead
SPAR INJURIES, PROCEDURE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. each girl BETTER know which Master she is to attend
2. KEEP TRACK OF HIS WOUNDS !!!!!
3. take a medical/suture kit and go to His chair right before the spar begins
4. prepare all that you will need to attend to Him (lay simple stuff out)
5. after the spar go the pit and help the Master back to His chair
6. then tend to His wounds
7. first stop any bleeding
8. next ask a free permission to offer a kanda leaf - tell the Free not to swallow the leaf or juice, just chew on it. (it is deadly if swallowed)
9. determine where the serious injuries are
10. tend to the wounds, broken bones, bruises etc., starting with the most serious
STITCHING A WOUND:
1. stop the bleeding
2. clean the wound -- saturate a clean rep cloth in sterile water o marigold oil -- carefully wipe the blood away
3. if wound is still bleeding, stop the bleeding again
4. determine what thread to use (internal / tem-thread *dissolves* for deep wounds -- external / silk-thread *remove 2-3 days* for not as deep)
5. determine what stitch to use (mattress stitches for places that bend, i.e., knee, wrist etc. -- herringbone for all others)
6. move quickly, ask Free permission to offer a kanda leaf, tell Free not to swallow leaf or juice, just chew on it (it is deadly to swallow) then apply kanda slave to edge that need stitches to numb it
7. stitch the wound using the tiniest stitches as possible, after every stitch tie a knot
8. apply marigold oil to fight infection
9. kanda salve to numb
10. sprinkle area with the healing herbs
11. apply a soft sterile pad to cover the wound
12. wrap the wound with clean bandages
ASSISTING A HEALER
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. kajira assistants need two basins of lukewarm water, one to add marigold oils to and the second to wash your hands -- if a Healer is present, prepare these basins for the Healer also.
2. if there are multiple injuries to a P/patient, one kajira should hold head still watching breathing
3. using sterile pad, place pressure to the bleeding site
4. thread the needles
5. have plenty of sterile rep cloths available
6. have kanda leaves for Healer to use -- if you apply ask Free for permission to use - tell P/person not to swallow the leaf or juices, just chew on it (it is deadly to swallow) OR willow bark or bazi tea prepared in a mug, do not ask just get it
7. person injured should not have any alcoholic beverages, while you should encourage a Free not to drink that, it is up to the Free to take the responsibility and follow through with the instructions of the Healer
HEALING PROCESS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. plantion and tessa powders are used -- depends again on the injury
2. if tubes are used, then you can guess that IV solution or blood transfer also had to be done
3. marigold oil is also used to flush wounds
4. bark strips, herbs and teas for headaches, pain, rashes and such
5. most attacks though would only need stitching and muscle stitching to repair (see "stitching a wound")
6. give cup of "restoration broth" and juice for blood loss -- if refused then the cure would take longer -- it is a known fact that alcohol breaks down the blood making it longer to heal
7. furring restriction will depend on the injury
8. stabilization serums are given in a series of 4 shots -- its effects almost stops aging for a few hundred years (Assassins of Gor) It also replenishes the cells to new which helps a wound heal faster

Breeding Wine;
(also called Second Wine)
(see quote for Teslik)
She did not need the sip root, of course, for, as she had pointed out, she had had some
